The use of trained interpreters is important for accurate communication between providers and patients of LEP. However, patient and cultural factors may still affect the interpretive process and the quality of care delivered. One study assessing communication about prognosis between providers and LEP patients with incurable cancer found that 23% of doctors’ speech regarding prognosis was not interpreted and 27% was interpreted non-equivalently. In 11% of cases, this was due to the interpreter efforts to misinform or change the topic, often due to cultural considerations.
